What is Bath Milk Photography?

A very popular form of photography is something called Bath Milk Photography – currently a trending search term on Google. Wait… what!?!

So what the fuck is Bath Milk Photography. As you probably have guessed by now, it is exactly what it sounds like. Fill a tub with milk, throw in some cereal, get your lighting right, and voila! You’ve just created Bath Milk photography! Ok ok, in all seriousness, it doesn’t have to include cereal, just seems like a waste of milk without some fruit loops.

While the entire concept sounds a bit odd, some photographers have achieved stunning results. The general idea is to fill up a bathtub with water to your desired height, and simply add two jugs of milk to create a white hue to the water. How much you add is totally up to you and the look you are after. Let’s take a look at some great photography work using the Bath Milk concept.

Here we have a photo from Photographer Gvansta Maghalkelidze. I absolutely love the color contrast between the roses, the skin, and the milky water. Often times we see maternity or newborn shoots using this method, so it’s refreshing to see someone use the concept to build creative portraits that delivery dramatic effects. Gvansta is based out of Tbilisi, Georgia, which lies on the banks of the Kura River with a population of approximately 1.5 million people. Check out more of her work in the description below for links to her work and what’s in her camera bag.

Here is another example of some great Bath Milk concepts, this one is more in line with how a lot of photographers are using this idea, maternity shots and newborns. This photograph is by Tiffany Burke, a photographer based out of Seatle and specializes in boudoir, weddings and family portraits. In this photograph, you can see how she has used the milky bath technique to actually help lend to the colors in the shot. Using bright flowers floating on the milky liquid, everything seems to POP and feel almost angelic. With a few simple pose changes, you’ve got yourself some pretty impressive Milk Bath Photography. Check out more of Tiffany’s work in the description below and a breakdown of the gear she uses.

Last but not least, the most popular Bath Milk Photographer on the web: Melissa Mullins, a photographer based out of Denver who is well known for her Bath Milk photography. Melissa has been featured in publications like Rock N Roll Bride and Cosplay Culture for her use of color in these milky shots. As you can see, there is a totally different emotion invoked when we see these photographs with that pop of color. Not only is Melissa well known for this technique, she teaches you exactly how to do it. Check out the description below for her links and a breakdown of what gear she uses.

That’s it for today guys! Thanks for watching and hopefully I have inspired you to try some new things and jump onto one of the most trending photography techniques this year.
