An Interview with David Fournier

Tell us a little bit about you? Where do you consider home?

Squamish has been my home  for 10 years now, but I was born in Quebec.

Have you attended school/taken any courses for Photography?

Self taught, school has never really worked out for me. In the early days of my  career I would spend a lot of time “de-constructing ” images, learning and trying to understand what made a great picture so much better than others…

Could you tell us something that few people know about you?

I play a LOT of guitar…like,  hours everyday .

What do you think of the current state of the photography industry/where do you see it in 5 years?

I think we couldn’t live in a better world as photographers! EVERYTHING revolves around images theses days. Whether its social medias, TV, magazines, even our own self image, we are constantly bombarded with images. I hope to be shooting  covers for VanityFair … lol

List 3 things you wish you had done sooner in your career.

Pretty happy with how things turned out for me but there is however one thing I wish I would have done sooner.Work on expanding my network.

If you could be invisible for one day with your camera, where would you go and what would you shoot?

Thats a no brainer  ,Im a dude so, the ladies room of course… lol. In all seriousness, Ive never really been afraid to ask anyone to let me photograph them.Beside, the majority of my work is all about interacting with the person in front of my camera…Being invisible would make things rather challenging for me I think…

What in our world, inspires you the most?

What is your current gear setup?

I shoot Nikon cameras, favorite at the moment is my D800

What is your favorite lens and why?

My 105 F2, its sneaky, its sexy and  it gets me right in there when I shoot portrait. Its crazy sharp, its heavy (which in my own mind means its good quality) , its old school, and I don’t see too many people using it

What lighting equipment do you take on a regular shoot if any?

Always have my trusty 7B Protofo pack with 2 heads, a  couple of speedlights , diffusers, bounces and sometimes I’ll bring my Elinchrom lights…if I’m in the mood.

How important is Photoshop in your final images?

I don’t have Photoshop so , its has important to me than going shopping for a new dress!

Are you a Mac or PC lover?

Among the gadgets you own, is there something that you wish you hadn’t bought? Why?

My Elinchroms lights, cheap, plasticy and expensive for the quality…I do however like the Rotalux light shaping tools

List 3 photographers you admire – past and/or present.

Only 3?!  Norman Jean Roy, Mark Seliger, Chase Jarvis…Annie Lebovitz, Alex Lubormiski, Rankin…Hahaha, there are SOOO many  of them, more like 30 of them on my list!!!

What or who got you started in photography?

Mountain biking is the reason I bought my first camera…I wanted to photograph my friends shredding bikes…2 weeks  later I was trading in that camera for something better and  bought my first speedlight…I realized I was WAY more into portraiture than action sports !

If you weren’t a professional photographer, what would you like to be doing?

Pro musician

Which 5 words would your friends use to describe you?

Best at what he does!!

What is your greatest fear?

Wasp, I hate those damn stingy bugs!

Do you have a favorite movie? Favorite television show?

I loooove Top Gear on the BBC!!

And the last question, What would you do if you won the lottery?

I would finance a group of mad scientists to invent an invisibility machine and I’d go spend my time in the ladies room. Hahahaha!
