An Interview with Helen Warner – Purist at Heart

Helen Warner, one of the best Creative Portrait photographers of our time.

500px, Blog, Facebook, Flickr

Tell us a little bit about you? Where do you consider home?

I was born in the south of England, I grew up in the south of France, and now I live in Ireland, where my mother is from originally. I have no idea where home is, I’ll suss that out one day!

Have you attended school/taken any courses for Photography?

I have a Masters in Cinema and Modernism, I mainly studied film theory. I’ve never taken any Photography courses.

List 3 photographers you admire – past and/or present.

Paolo Roversi (for his relationship with light), Sylwia Makris (For her strong and magical portraits) and Kirsty Mitchell (for her devotion to her Wonderland project)

Could you tell us something that few people know about you?

I have a phobia of Sloths.

What do you think of the current state of the photography industry/where do you see it in 5 years?

It’s a big mess really, but at the same time a limitless and democratic art form, moving forward and all over the place. It’s very hard to give a definitive answer to this. I predict a return to realism, less use of Photoshop in pursuit of perfection.

List 3 things you wish you had done sooner in your career.

1. Believed in my skills.
2. Picked up my camera more.
3. Attended art school (hummm or maybe not..)

If you could be invisible for one day with your camera, where would you go?

Behind the scenes of a Royal Ballet performance.

What in our world, inspires you the most?

Mainly places; beaches, landscapes, mountains.

What is your current gear setup?

A canon 5d and a SAD light for indoor shoots.

What is your favorite lens and why?

28mm, gives me a bit more distance in tight spots.

What lighting equipment do you take on a regular shoot if any?

How important is Photoshop in your final images?

I don’t have Photoshop, basic editing and sometimes I try Gimp but fail miserably.

Are you a Mac or PC lover?

Mac Love!

What or who got you started in photography?

Doing a stills story board for a short film.

If you weren’t a professional photographer, what would you like to be doing?

Shooting music videos (maybe one day!)

Which 5 words would your friends use to describe you?

Slightly eccentric, funny, creative, bit of a brat and chronic hermit tendencies.

What is your greatest fear?

Loosing my sanity.

Do you have a favorite movie? Favorite television show?

Any Wim Wender movies and any period dramas (I admit it!).

And the last question, What would you do if you won the lottery?…

Buy a flat in London, New York, Rome, Paris and a country house in Ireland and spend my time traveling between them all in a caravan and taking photographs.
