Derek Boe, aka “BONES” is one of Calgary Alberta’s most creative graphic artists. He is talented in so many different areas, but his love truly is for developing Video Games. His other talents include, Pixel Art, Painting, Sketching, Graphic Clothing Design, and Vector/3D Art. All of these skills plus his passion to create is going to help him make his mark in the industry.
Tell us a little bit about you?
I’m a skateboarding, illustrator and animator, indie game developer, whole listens to Electro Swing.
Where do you consider home?
Calgary, AB – It’s all I know, never been anywhere else.
How long have you been a Digital Artist?
8 years give or take.
How long have you been into Photo Manipulation?
I tried it out back in ’09 after seeing some worth 1000 entrees.
What or who got you started in Digital Art?
The web community Pixelation and pixel art gallery Pixeljoint were my introduction to digital art, my online peers helped me learned the ways of the pixel.
How would you describe your style?
I like to work with fringe and the macabre, as well as play homage to nostalgic times.
What is your current gear setup?
Are you a Mac or PC lover?
Your work really inspires myself and many others to pursue art in a wider degree. What gives you ideas and inspires you to create such amazing pieces?
Browsing the web, reading articles, books, comics, hybridizing old ideas with new ideas.
What has been your most memorable or favorite project and why?
I’ve been working on a video game for four years to present day, it’s by far my largest undertaking and is my favorite project to work on.
Do you have a website and/or blog you visit often? How about forums?
What do you feel is the most challenging thing about being an artist?
Feeding yourself without acquiring a second job.
What do you think of the current state of the Art Industry and where do you see it in 5 years from now?
The video game industry and art industry is all a big money grab.
People trying to pay off debts, and in 5 years those debts are just going to get larger for newer artists.
It doesn’t bode well.
The internet and independent local support through galleries and collectives are important, and if these cease to exist the Art Industry will be plagued with nothing but slave driven graphic designers.
If I wasn’t a photographer, I would have loved to have been a writer or dancer. What would you have been?
A bio-mechanical engineer.
Is there a particular person in your life that you could say has taught you the most out of anyone you know?
Shigeru Miyamoto. He is Japanese video game designer and producer. He is best known as the creator of some of the most successful video game franchises of all time, including Mario, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, F-Zero, Pikmin, and the Wii series.
What would you do if you won the lottery?
Construct a self-sustaining community on crown land.
What would you like to be doing in 5 years from now?
Doing more art, at higher quality, with more love.
